Every year shoppers ask the same question: is Cyber Monday or Black Friday better for deals? The honest answer is that it depends on what you are buying. The two days used to be very different, with Black Friday for in-store doorbusters and Cyber Monday for online shopping. Today almost every retailer sells online, sales start weeks early, and many prices stay the same from Friday to Monday. In 2026, Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. Here is how to decide which day to buy on, category by category.
Which is better, Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
Black Friday is usually better for physical products such as TVs, smart home devices, printers and kitchen appliances, while Cyber Monday is usually better for digital products and online-only stores, such as web hosting, VPNs, software subscriptions and fashion. The overlap is large, though. Many retailers launch their Black Friday prices in early or mid-November and keep them running until Cyber Monday, so for a lot of products the price is identical on both days.
Online spending is now highest on Cyber Monday. Adobe Analytics, which tracks US online sales, reported that shoppers spent about 13.3 billion dollars online on Cyber Monday 2024, compared with about 10.8 billion on Black Friday. That reflects how many people shop online on the Monday, not necessarily that discounts are bigger.
When do Black Friday deals start in 2026?
Earlier than you might think. Amazon and many big retailers start "early Black Friday" deals in the first or second week of November, and some brands run sales through the whole month. Web hosts and VPN providers often announce their Black Friday pricing in November and keep it live into early December. Treat the Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend as the peak of a month-long sale, not a single day.
Are smart home and electronics deals better on Black Friday?
Usually, yes. Black Friday is traditionally the strongest day for Amazon devices and smart home gear, such as Echo speakers and displays, Ring doorbells, Kindles and Fire TV sticks. These often hit their lowest prices of the year during the weekend, and the deals typically last through Cyber Monday.
If you are choosing a device, do your research before the sale so you can buy quickly. Our guides help you pick the right model first:
- Best Ring doorbell - battery vs wired, 2K vs 4K.
- Echo Show 8 vs Echo Show 11 - which smart display fits your kitchen or desk.
- Kindle Scribe review - whether Amazon's writing Kindle is worth it.
- Best laser printer - Brother, HP and Canon compared.
Is Cyber Monday better for web hosting, VPNs and software?
Often, yes, although the best hosting and VPN prices typically run across the whole period. Digital services do not have stock limits, so providers frequently keep their Black Friday price into Cyber Monday and sometimes add a Cyber Monday extra, such as bonus months or a bigger discount on longer plans. The key is to compare the total cost of the term and the renewal price, not only the headline monthly figure. Our guide to Black Friday web hosting deals explains exactly how to do that.
Do prices drop again on Cyber Monday?
Sometimes, but rarely by much. Some retailers add new Cyber Monday deals or lightning offers, and a few categories, such as clothing and online-only brands, can get extra discounts. For most electronics, the Cyber Monday price matches Black Friday. Waiting until Monday is a gamble: popular items, colours and bundles can sell out over the weekend.
Are Black Friday deals really the lowest prices of the year?
For many products, yes, but not all. Amazon devices, TVs and popular electronics often reach their lowest prices of the year over the Black Friday weekend, sometimes matched only by Prime Day. Other items are "deals" only against an inflated list price. The way to tell is to look at what the product actually sold for over the past few weeks, not the crossed-out price on the page. If a discount looks unusually large on an unfamiliar brand, be cautious. For trusted brands, a price that matches or beats the last major sale is usually a good buy, whichever day it appears.
How to get the best price on either day
- Make a shortlist now. Decide the exact model you want so you are not swayed by deals on products you do not need.
- Know the normal price. Check today's price so you can tell a real discount from a marked-up "deal".
- Buy at a low you are happy with. If your item hits a strong price in early November, it is often fine to buy then rather than wait.
- Check bundles carefully. A bundle is only a deal if you would use every part of it.
- Stack savings. Look for coupon codes and cashback that work on top of the sale. Our discount code guide explains how.
- Read the return policy. Many retailers extend holiday returns into January, which lets you buy early with less risk.
Which day should you shop on?
Shop on Black Friday for TVs, smart home devices, Kindles and other electronics, especially popular items that may sell out. Shop on Cyber Monday, or any time in the weekend, for web hosting, VPNs, software and online-only stores. If you are not in a hurry, keep an eye on prices through the whole month, because the best deal often appears before either day.
